A Symphony of Sound in Bloom

It’s said that music is a universal language and in a world where music can bridge cultural divides, few experiences are as moving as a collaboration between Newpark Community Orchestra and Ukrainian Musicians Association in the RDS library back in late February. ‘A Spring of Hope’, a union, brought together the elegance and grandeur of classical symphonic music with the rich cultural heritage of Ukraine, creating performances that resonated deeply on both artistic and emotional levels.
And what a beautiful venue for such a concert, the quiet and reflective nature of the library added to the serene ambience and glow which illuminated the space so the audience were fully immersed in the unforgettable experience.
The concept for this concert originated in the Sandymount Community Centre, where they host a Ukrainian school on Saturday mornings and it was put together by Cormac McGinley who is the Chairman of the Sandymount Culture Programme and Vitaliy Kushtala, a resident of Sandymount who works in the RDS. The Ukrainian musicians had played alongside some of the orchestra members whether at trad sessions in the centre or their Christmas Extravaganza. Music has the ability to integrate communities bringing diverse groups that allow people to share their unique traditions and learn about others and this can have an empowered effect on those that might not have access to musical opportunities and this is what the centre’s core message is all about. Younger and older generations can come together to build stronger community bonds also, fostering a deeper sense of inclusion and understanding.
In recent years, Ukrainian musicians have faced immense challenges due to political instability and conflict, yet the passion for music and unwavering dedication to their craft have remained unshaken. This concert was also a tribute to their artistry and a testament to their strength in the face of hardship but also a celebration of the ways in which music can bring people together from all walks of life, regardless of their background or nationality.
The Newpark Community Orchestra was founded in 2013, bringing a community of musicians to rehearse as a non-professional orchestra, and to be able to perform for local community events. Under the excellent musical direction of Andre Cavanagh, the smooth, silky sounds and fusion of style with acoustic instruments, soft drums, delicate violins, flutes and harps, among others all complimented the lightness of the library.
Ukrainian Music Association performers showcased a blend of soprano, mezzo soprano, guitar, piano, along with the flute and sopilka and when these sounds were woven into this classical orchestra, it was extremely powerful.
Music at its core is about connection and this concert left audiences not only with a deeper appreciation for Ukrainian music but also with a form of solidarity through their story of struggle and hope. This was more than just a concert, it was a symbol of resilience, unity, and the coming together of a nation in harmony of peace and love and their musical spirit will continue to thrive and inspire.
