Empowered Women Empower the World!

By Louise Whelan

International Women’s Day is celebrated globally on March 8th to honour the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.  A variety of local events were planned throughout the week, which included a breakfast celebration in the Greenore Centre, thanks to Dublin Rotary Club and the centre’s wonderful committee and in Unit18 (Trinity in the Community) in Macken Street, they organised an afternoon tea of inspiration, chats, and fun, launched by Prof Jo-Hanna Ivers (Associate Dean of Engagement TCD) and presented by Liz Watson, local resident and Community Activist alongside Mary Colclough (Community Engagement Manager).  This event celebrated women living in the local area, with various speakers voicing their achievements to date and hopes for the future. Everybody enjoyed the delicious bespoke cupcakes made especially for International Women’s Day by Frankiezbakes, based in Dublin 4.

The Remarkable Women Project which is a non-profit organisation based in New York, held their first global summit in Ringsend and Irishtown Community Centre.  Founded in 2023 by producers, Jane Applegate and Alice Look, this organisation is dedicated to sharing stories about remarkable women to encourage everyone to live more courageously.  Jill Doyle is the Dublin based advisory committee chairwoman here and founder and director at the National Performing Arts School (NPAS).

RICC hosted women from Ireland, America, France and Finland with various speakers throughout the day, panel discussions, workshops, a meditation, not to mention the craic and banter from start to finish! Glee Ladies also took to the stage to deliver the powerful finale, with Madison Tucker leaving the audience in awe with her stunning duet with Glee frontwoman, Liza Caulfield.

Here’s to the women who shape the world, today and every day, who keep pushing forward until their voice is heard, valued and celebrated, who continue to break barriers and inspire change.
