One Planter at a Time

If you happened to see the new stunning artwork on the planters on South Lotts road, it’s all thanks to a project between some members of the Shelbourne Park Residents Association, artist John O’Flynn, and sponsored by Capital Credit Union in Bath Avenue. John created and transformed an ordinary space into something so visually engaging and thought provoking with a representation of the history, values, traditions and collective experiences of the residents who live there by incorporating elements that are only specific to South Lotts and Ringsend and their heritage, so the artwork on every large planter reflects the key landmarks in the area’s past and present. This makes South Lotts unique and unified and ultimately, for the community it creates a stronger sense of identity, pride and connection, while also being a space for collaboration, enjoyment and learning. John’s painting style and techniques are heavily influenced by his background in graffiti, street art and industrial design and he uses spray paint, acrylics and watercolour to create his artistic expression.
This functioning piece of public art will encourage gardening, promote sustainability and brighten up the space while also teaching younger generations about their local history, making it a meaningful representation of the South Lotts community spirit.
Speaking about the launch, John said, “I was delighted to be selected to paint the planters on South Lotts Road. It was amazing to learn about the rich history in the Ringsend area, from the iconic gasometers to the IGB bottling facility. The project is special in the way that preserves the history of the area as well as adding a vivid pop of colour to the streets.” John thanked SPRA members Paul Brannock, Billy Ryan, and Jackie Garvey. Also Rachel Lopez, (Ringsend & District Historical Society) for all the guidance throughout the project.
Paul Brannock also thanked Capital Credit Union, especially Robert Giles, and the Shelbourne Park Residents Association, with a special mention to Helen and Eamonn Downey for maintaining the planters and artist Chelsea Jacobs who sourced John as the right man for the job.
So make sure to check them out the next time you’re out strolling as the flowers will be blooming coming into Spring/Summer, adding beauty for a vibrant scenic view.
