Docklands 5K takes place on Thursday, June 15th
By Brian Bowe
Think you’ve mastered the park run? Tired of being slowed down by pedestrians and all the cute dogs that must be petted? Well, then lace up, stretch out and register for the Docklands 5k run, taking place Thursday, June 15th.
The Docklands 5k, organised by the runners from Irishtown’s Crusaders Athletic Club, is a 5k run over a flat, fast loop in Dublin’s Docklands area. The race is a non-profit event, with all proceeds going to help improve the facilities of Crusaders AC and to promote sport, health and wellbeing in the community.
The race will be kicking off at 7:45pm, Thursday evening. The run itself starts on the South Docks near Lime Street, which is very close to the Samuel Beckett Bridge. From there you will head towards the City Centre all the way to the Matt Talbot Bridge where you will cross over to the North Quay. From there you will run all the way down to the 3 Arena where you will loop back down the North Quay again towards the Matt Talbot Bridge. Then you will cross the bridge again and back to the South Quay. And from there you will head back past the start line. The finish line is approximately 600 metres beyond the start line and you will finish at Capital Dock on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay. You are then just a small stroll away from the bag drop area in Capital Dock Square.

It’s very important to note that you will be provided with a bag tag at drop-off. Please make sure to write on the tag the race number that you will be given at registration and attach it to your bag. Give the bag to the steward and it will be placed in a numbered sequence so that it can be easily recovered after the race. Please do not leave valuables in your bag – the event organisers accept no responsibility for loss of personal effects.
All runners receive a technical running T-shirt for signing up. The official assembly area for the event will be on the City Quay between the Start line and the southern end of the Samuel Beckett Bridge. Please make sure that you enter the start section corresponding to your expected finishing time. Your time zone location will be facilitated by the presence of pacing groups (20 mins, 25 mins and 30 mins) and, in order to avoid impeding speedier runners, you’re advised not to assemble in a zone that would be ahead of your likely finishing time. You are expected to assemble in this area at the latest 20 minutes before the start of the race (19:25).

Now for the fun part: the prizes! The prize giving ceremony will follow as soon as possible after the lead participants have crossed the finish line and will be held at Capital Dock, just beyond the finish line. Any prizes not collected on the evening will be sent out to competitors. 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female runners across the lines will receive cash prizes, respectively, of €300, €200 and €100. There will also be a cash prize of €100 if either or both of the male and female course records are broken. Entry is open to runners of all levels, either as individual participants or in teams of three. Team categories are Male only, Female only and Mixed. Prizes for all three corporate team categories will be on offer. There are also team perpetual trophies for Female and Male AI Club teams (3 to score).
The race entry fee is €20 per individual athlete. Teams of three are priced at €60. The minimum age requirement for entry into the race is 16. Online entries close on Monday June 12. After that time (up to race day at 17:00) they accept walk-ins for €25 per entry. Available at number pick up at Club Vitae in the Clayton Hotel in Cardiff Lane, Dublin 2.
