UCD will host its tenth annual TEDxUCD event this Friday, and the ten speakers at this year’s event have been announced.

The event will run from 10am – 4pm in the UCD Dramsoc Theatre at the UCD Student Centre and will feature talks on a wide variety of subjects from researchers, students and alumni. The most noteworthy speakers are Dearbhla Burke, Dr. Susan Delaney and Dr. Andrew Hogan.

Burke is a psychotherapist and a PhD student at the UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Socio Science. Her talk is called “The Insult Added To Injury” and she spoke of her anticipation for it:

“I am looking forward to taking part in this year’s TEDxUCD event. During my talk I will highlight the significant problem of spinal cord injury pain and aim to explain how patients can have pain in an area where they have no feeling….the insult added to their injury.”

Delaney is a clinical psychologist and Bereavement Services Manager at the Irish Hospice Foundation, which has long been affiliated with UCD’s School of Psychology. Her talk is entitled “Grief, It’s Complicated…10% of the Time.”

She spoke about the issues she will address in the talk:

“We tend to hold strong opinions about grief; how long it should take to heal and what helps the grieving process. As I will outline in my forthcoming TEDxUCD 2016 talk these opinions are often at odds with the latest research which indicates that grief is more complicated.”

Hogan is a senior scientist with the obesity immunology research at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, as well as a research scientist at the UCD School of Medicine. His talk is called “Losing Weight – Why is it So Difficult?”, in which he will discuss the factors that impact a person’s weight:

“More and more we realise that weight loss is not as simple as energy in and energy out. As I will outline in my forthcoming TEDxUCD 2016 talk our research is trying to tease out the role of the immune system in the regulation of body weight.”

The other talks on the day will be “Memory Keepers” by Dr. Sandra Collins, “The True Trouble of Tax Trickery” by Professor Ron Davies, “The Cancer Story You Haven’t Heard” by Professor Michaela Higgins, “The Misunderstood Brain” by Duncan Lennox, “Tiny Bubbles to Clean Up Disease” by Associate Professor Patricia Maguire, “Partition, Where to Draw the Line” by Dr. Conor Mulvagh and “Learning Languages Emotionally” by John Sloan.

Further information about the talks can be found at this webpage.
