If you’re a regular reader of NewsFour’s weekly cinema roundup, you’ll be aware that the Lighthouse cinema has been running a comprehensive Stanley Kubrick season over the past couple of months. The season was prompted by the remastering of Kubrick’s sci-fi epic 2001: A Space Odyssey. The newly spruced up print goes on release this week at both the Lighthouse and The Irish Film Institute. A cinematic spectacle like few others, the movie is definitely one to see on the big screen. Its effects look as good today as on the film’s 1968 release, and in my opinion hold up better than most of the computer generated effects seen in modern cinema.
Fans of insane Asian cinema need to get to the Lighthouse on Friday night, when Shogun Assassin plays courtesy of Grindhouse Dublin at 10.30. The film is actually an amalgamation of two installments of a Japanese series called Lone Wolf and Cub, which features a samurai roaming Japan with his infant son and taking on all comers in spectacularly over the top fashion, accompanied by a great 80s synth score. I can’t think of many better ways to spend a Friday night.
The annual French Film Festival, featuring Irish premieres of the latest Gallic releases alongside French classics, continues at the IFI, wrapping up on Sunday.
